Burner units
The main purpose of the burner units of hot air balloons is heating the air in the envelope.
Why are burners by SPE «RUSBAL» integrated into units? The burner unit excludes any possibility of uncontrollable descending caused by a failure of one of the burners. Every burner of the unit has the main burner, vaporization of fuel takes place in its vaporizer; and a burner working with liquid fuel, sometimes called a whisper burner. Thus, a burning unit by SPE «RUSBAL» has four independent burners, providing four-time redundancy protection.
The production range of the company includes four models of burner units of various heat output, providing operation of air balloons with all permissible combinations of baskets and envelopes.
Advantages of burner units by SPE «RUSBAL»
- the ability to provide the required heat output* at a low pressure in the cylinders -below 1,5 atm*;
- providing higher quality of combustion, blue color of the flame testifies to it (see the picture above); it makes possible to reduce thermal radiation and contamination with products of gas combustion;
- proven in practice reliability of the burner units at the altitudes higher than 1000m , without any additional upgrade;
- easy maintenance.
*the required heat output is the air balloon compliance with airworthiness standards АП31, CS31, FAR31 as per the air balloon capability to climb to an altitude of 90 m from the state of equilibrium in less than 1 minute.
The heat output of the burner unit must match the selected basket and the envelope capacity. The manufactured burner units provide efficient air balloon flight control for all models and capacities of the envelopes. The bigger is the envelope, the more powerful burner is required. If an envelope of one and the same capacity is compatible with several types of burner units, one should be guided by the following principles:
1) for one and the same envelope the consumption gas per hour does not depend on the heat output of the burner unit;
2) a burner of a higher heat output is more noisy, but it can provide a higher rate of climb for the air balloon.
Anyhow, the burner unit must match the selected basket and the envelope.
Phoenix-1 burner units
Phoenix-1 models have one common vaporizer, two independent blast valves, two whisper (liquid) burners. They are named Phoenix-1 and Phoenix-X1 and differ in heat output.
Phoenix-1 The smallest burner unit with full gas redundancy and two silent burners.

Phoenix-X1 differs from Phoenix-1 in a bigger cross section of the vaporizer. When one blast valve is in operation the burner unit is equal in heat output to Phoenix-2 burner unit.

Phoenix-2 buner unit
Phoenix-2 models have two independent burners, including a blast valve, and a liquid (whisper) burner. The units are named Phoenix-2 and Phoenix-X2 and differ in heat output.
Phoenix-2 is supplied complete with 2 frames.

Phoenix-X2 - the most powerful burner unit; it differs from Phoenix-2 by bigger cross-sections of the vaporizers and gas-supplying hoses.
To reach the full heat output the Phoenix-X2 must be operated with manifold hoses, providing gas supply from two cylinders simultaneously.
